Douglas Cusine reports...

....that at Drumpellier GC someone put his first drive into the rough, followed by the club. No. 2, the same. No. 3 the same at which point, the Pro said, "If I were you, I would throw another provisional."

This reminds me of Spud, a former Captain at Lothianburn GC.  Spud had been a senior police officer and at 6 foot plus, he certainly had  the build.  Not a golfer though and the possessor of a formidable temper.  I played with Spud in a monthly medal many years ago and he was not having a good round.  Spud could shank for Scotland and if you're going to to have such a calamity befall you, the 17th fairway is not the place you'd pick, as there's gorse bushes all the way up the right (and left) of the fairway.  Sadly, Spud duffed his drive and then hit one of the better shanks I've ever seen (and that's a lot, mainly by me!) into the heavy gorse.  This was clearly enough for Spud and his 7 iron quickly followed, into the thickest section of the gorse.  Unfortunately, Spud's club could not be reached and as we were still playing in a competition it had to be abandoned.

Even worse, by the time Spud went back out to try to find it, he quickly discovered that close up, one gorse bush looks pretty much like another.  There was also still a competition going on and Spud's area of search was within reach from the 17th tee, meaning he had to wait and then subsequently explain to passing competitors what he was doing.  Rumour has it that a search next day was also unsuccessful.

The most difficult shot in golf?  The next one after a shank.
